Laser Radial Worlds, Karatsu, Japan 2009
Arriving in Karatsu on the 19th of July it was very hot and humid but I got used to the humidity as I already had been in Kyoto and Tokyo for 4 days sight seeing. I had a total of 5 training days prior to the worlds. We had completely different conditions training than we had during the championships. Most days were quite light and the sea breezes were a nice 8-10 knots.
The first day of racing in the worlds were similar conditions light sea breezes but for the next 5 days it was big swells and windy which was very unexpected. Almost similar to a strong sea breeze here at ASC. We sailed in a bay where there were a few scattered islands (see picture)
It was a very physical regatta and challenging conditions, sailing in the worlds has definitely improved my skills and I have learnt so much in the 2 weeks. It was a fantastic experience, sailing in another country and experiencing their culture and lifestyle which is very different to Australia. The people were very kind, helpful and interested taking photos of everyone everyday – I don't think some had seen westerner's in real life before.
Thank you to the SA Laser Association and the Adelaide Sailing Club for their support.

The view from the Castle of Castle Bay we raced just past the first island on the left it took about 40 minutes to sail out to the start on a reach in at least 15 knots.

Karatsu Castle looked over the bay "castle bay"

A wet day standing in the boat park rigging up.

Some Australian Girls with the Japanese children who performed at the opening and closing ceremony, they were excited to have a photo with us.
